    Thattu

Thattu refers to mineral-based preparations in Siddha medicine involving the careful processing and compounding of metallic and mineral substances for therapeutic use.

    Overview

Thattu preparations are a distinctive feature of the Siddha system, where raw minerals and metals are systematically purified, calcined, and compounded to create potent therapeutic agents. The term “Thattu” broadly encompasses the mineral preparation methodology that transforms toxic raw materials into safe, bioavailable medicines. This alchemical tradition forms the backbone of Siddha pharmacology and distinguishes it from purely herbal medical systems.

    Method/Content

Thattu preparation begins with Shodhana (purification) of raw minerals through repeated boiling in specific media such as cow’s urine, herbal decoctions, or lime water. The purified material is then subjected to Marana (calcination) in sealed containers (Sarava Samputa) at controlled temperatures for specified durations. The resulting ash or powder is further processed through levigation, trituration, and compounding with herbal vehicles. Quality control involves testing for particle size, color, taste, and absence of residual toxicity. Common Thattu ingredients include mercury, sulfur, iron, tin, copper, and various gemstones.

    Purpose/Benefits

Thattu preparations offer bioavailable mineral nutrition and targeted therapeutic action that herbal medicines alone cannot achieve. They are particularly valued in Siddha medicine for treating chronic conditions, diseases of the nervous system, and conditions requiring deep tissue penetration. The calcination process renders toxic minerals safe while preserving their therapeutic properties, making Thattu a unique pharmaceutical achievement of ancient South Indian medicine.

    Verification Notes

    • Thattu methodology is described in classical Siddha texts including Yogaratnakaram and Vaidya Chintamani
    • The purification process has been validated by modern analytical chemistry for toxin removal
    • Thattu preparations are approved by the Indian Ministry of AYUSH for clinical use
