    Ratna Śāstra

Ratna Śāstra, the Indian science of gemstones, prescribes specific precious and semi-precious stones for astrological remediation and therapeutic purposes. Each gemstone is associated with a graha (planet)—ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, red coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite for Rāhu, and cat’s eye for Ketu.

The system integrates with Jyotiṣa through the principle that gemstones channel planetary energies to the wearer, mitigating malefic effects or strengthening benefic influences. The Garuḍa Purāṇa contains extensive catalogs of gemstone qualities, sources, and testing methods.

    Origins

Gemological knowledge in India dates to the Arthaśāstra of Kauṭilya (4th century BCE), which classifies gems and their sources. The Ratnaśāstra tradition crystallized through texts like the Ratna Parīkṣā (gem testing) and the Agni Purāṇa’s gem chapter, merging practical gemology with astrological theory.

    Practice/Methodology

Selection requires Janma Kundalī analysis to identify planetary weaknesses. Gems must meet quality standards—minimum carat weight, clarity, and color saturation—and be worn in specific metals and finger placements. The wearing ceremony involves mantras and propitiation rituals. Testing traditionally includes color, luster, weight, temperature, and scratch tests.

    Modern status

Gem-based astrological remedies represent a multi-billion dollar industry in India. The practice faces skepticism from gemologists who note that treated or synthetic stones dominate the market, potentially undermining traditional efficacy claims. Cultural adherence remains strong despite commercial complexities.

    Verification notes

Gemstone mineralogy is well-established science, but the claim that specific stones influence planetary energies lacks empirical support. No controlled studies demonstrate astrological gemstone effects. The tradition’s persistence reflects cultural embeddedness rather than validated mechanism.
