    Shiva Sutras

The Shiva Sutras are the root text of Kashmir Shaivism. Tradition holds that the seventy-seven aphorisms were revealed to the sage Vasugupta, who found them engraved on a rock at Mahadeva mountain near Srinagar.

    Content

The text comprises seventy-seven sutras in three sections: the first (shambhavopaya) treats the direct path of Shiva, the awakening of consciousness; the second (shaktopaya) the path of pure knowledge and mantra; the third (anavopaya) the individual path of breath, ritual, and posture. The sutras are elliptical — “consciousness is the self” (caitanyam atma), “knowledge is bondage” (jnanam bandhah) — and require commentary. Kshemaraja’s Shiva Sutra Vimarshini became the standard gloss.

    Significance

The Shiva Sutras founded the exegetical tradition of the Trika school, elaborated by Kallata, Somananda, Utpaladeva, and Abhinavagupta. Their central claim — that the world is Shiva’s own vibration (spanda), not an illusion to be denied — distinguishes Kashmir Shaivism from Shankara’s Advaita.
