    Sanatana Dharma

Sanatana Dharma is a term meaning “eternal order” or “eternal way,” used as a designation for the totality of Hindu religious and philosophical traditions, emphasizing their timeless, universal character.

    Overview

The term “Sanatana Dharma” appears in the Mahabharata and various Puranas, where it refers to the eternal, unchanging principles of righteousness and cosmic order. In the modern period, it was adopted by Hindu reformers and revivalists—including Swami Vivekananda and the Hindu nationalist movement—as an inclusive label for Hinduism that transcends sectarian divisions. The term emphasizes that dharma is not a created system but an inherent aspect of reality.

    Core Teachings

Sanatana Dharma encompasses a vast range of beliefs and practices, but its core principles include belief in Brahman (ultimate reality), Atman (the self), karma (action and consequence), samsara (the cycle of rebirth), and moksha (liberation). It upholds the authority of the Vedas, the importance of dharma (righteous living), and the validity of multiple paths to the divine—bhakti (devotion), jnana (knowledge), karma (action), and raja yoga (meditation). The tradition affirms that truth is one, though wise people call it by different names.

    Practice and Ritual

Practices within Sanatana Dharma are enormously diverse, ranging from Vedic fire rituals to temple worship, from yogic meditation to ecstatic bhajan singing. Common elements include daily puja, observance of festivals, pilgrimage to sacred sites, and life-cycle ceremonies (samskaras) marking birth, education, marriage, and death. The tradition accommodates both monasticism and householder life as valid spiritual paths.

    Modern Status

Sanatana Dharma has become the preferred self-designation for many Hindus, both in India and the diaspora, particularly those who wish to emphasize the continuity and universality of the tradition. The term is used in educational contexts, political discourse, and interfaith dialogue. It remains a living, evolving tradition with over a billion adherents worldwide.

    Verification Notes

    • “Sanatana Dharma” is a modern umbrella term, not a single organized religion
    • Distinguished from “Hinduism” which is a geographic/exonymic designation
