    Mimamsa

Mimamsa (also known as Purva Mimamsa) is one of the six orthodox (astika) schools of Hindu philosophy, focused on the interpretation of Vedic ritual texts and the philosophy of language and hermeneutics.

    Overview

The Mimamsa school was founded by Jaimini (c. 3rd–2nd century BCE), who composed the Mimamsa Sutras, a systematic treatise on the interpretation of Vedic ritual texts. The school developed sophisticated principles of hermeneutics (the science of interpretation) and philosophy of language that became foundational for Indian legal and philosophical discourse. Mimamsa is primarily concerned with the philosophical justification of Vedic ritual practice.

    Core Teachings

Mimamsa teaches the eternal validity of the Vedas and provides a systematic framework for interpreting Vedic injunctions (vidhi). The school holds that the Vedas are authorless (apaurushaya) and eternal, and that their meaning is understood through rigorous hermeneutical principles. Mimamsa philosophy emphasizes the importance of dharma as enacted through ritual practice and develops elaborate theories of language, meaning, and interpretation.

    Practice and Ritual

Mimamsa practice centers on the study and interpretation of Vedic ritual texts, the performance of Vedic rituals, and the application of hermeneutical principles. The tradition values precise understanding of ritual procedure and the philosophical justification of practice. Mimamsa scholars serve as authorities on Vedic ritual interpretation and legal matters.

    Modern Status

The Mimamsa tradition continues to be studied in traditional Sanskrit schools and academic institutions. Its hermeneutical principles continue to influence Indian legal and philosophical discourse. The school’s contribution to Indian philosophy of language and interpretation has attracted increasing scholarly attention.
