Jagannath Puri
Jagannath Puri (जगन्नाथ पुरी) is a holy city in Odisha, home to the famous Jagannath Temple and the annual Rath Yatra festival.
Overview
Puri is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites and is famous for the Jagannath Temple, dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Krishna), along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The annual Rath Yatra (chariot festival) is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
History and Legend
According to legend, King Indradyumna of Malwa discovered the wooden forms of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra floating in the sea. He built the temple to house these deities. The temple tradition dates back to at least the 12th century CE. The Rath Yatra commemorates the annual journey of the deities to the Gundicha Temple.
Architecture and Features
The Jagannath Temple is a massive Kalinga-style structure with a 65-meter tower. The temple complex includes the main sanctum, the Natamandapa (dance hall), and the Bhoga Mandapa.
