Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram
The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM), founded in 1976 in Chennai by T.K.V. Desikachar and students, is the institutional carrier of T. Krishnamacharya’s teaching — the “teacher of teachers” whose students (Iyengar, Jois, Indra Devi, and his son Desikachar) seeded modern yoga’s largest streams.
Overview
Krishnamacharya (1888–1989) taught privately in his last decades in Chennai; the Mandiram (founded after his death’s approach) preserved his later method: yoga adapted to the individual (viniyoga), breath-centered practice, chanting, and therapeutic application.
Core teachings
Viniyoga — the principle that practice must fit the practitioner (age, capacity, condition, temperament); the primacy of the breath in asana; the therapeutic frame (yoga chikitsa); the inseparability of scripture (the Yoga Sutra as living text) from practice.
Practice and work
One-to-one therapy sessions, teacher trainings, publication of Krishnamacharya’s works (Yoga Makaranda and later texts edited by the KYM), and its healing archive of case-based applications.
Modern status
The KYM continues as a leading yoga-therapy institution recognized by Indian health authorities; Desikachar’s lineage institutions (the KYM’s successor teachers) carry the method globally.
