Vyasa
Vyasa (व्यास), also known as Vedavyasa (the one who classified the Vedas) and Krishna Dvaipayana, is the legendary sage traditionally credited with composing the Mahabharata, one of the longest epic poems in world literature, and with systematizing the Vedas.
Mahabharata
The Mahabharata is a vast epic of approximately 100,000 verses that tells the story of the great war between the Pandava and Kaurava cousins for the throne of Hastinapura. At its heart lies the Bhagavad Gita, the sacred dialogue between Lord Krishna and the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, which has become one of the most important texts of Hindu philosophy and spirituality.
Vyasa’s authorship of the Mahabharata is presented within the text itself — he is both a character in the story and its narrator, dictating the epic to the elephant-headed god Ganesha. The Mahabharata encompasses philosophy, ethics, mythology, and practical wisdom, making it a comprehensive guide to human life.
Vedas and Brahma Sutras
Vyasa is credited with classifying the Vedas into four collections: Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. He also authored the Brahma Sutras (also called Vedanta Sutrasic/vedanta) Sutras), which systematize the philosophical teachings of the Upanishads. The Brahma Sutras became one of the three foundational texts (Prasthanatrayi) of Vedanta philosophy, along with the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.
Puranas
Vyasa is also credited with composing the eighteen Mahapuranas, vast encyclopedic texts covering mythology, cosmology, genealogy, and religious practice. The Puranas played a crucial role in making Hindu mythology and theology accessible to the general population.
Legacy
Vyasa’s contribution to Hindu literature and philosophy is unparalleled. His works have shaped Hindu thought, culture, and religious practice for over two millennia. He is venerated as one of the greatest sages in Hindu tradition, regarded in many traditions as a partial incarnation (aṃśāvatāra) of Vishnu and one of the Chiranjivis, and his birthday, Vyasa Purnima, is celebrated as Guru Purnima.
