    Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda (स्वामी विवेकानन्द) — born Narendranath Datta — was the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the figure most responsible for introducing Advaita Vedānta to the Western world. His 1893 address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, beginning with “Sisters and brothers of America,” made him an instant sensation and opened a new chapter in the global spread of Hindu philosophy.

    Life and mission

Born in 1863 in Kolkata, Narendra was drawn to spiritual inquiry from a young age. After meeting Sri Ramakrishna in 1881, he underwent a profound transformation and eventually renounced worldly life. Following Ramakrishna’s death in 1886, he traveled across India as a wandering monk, witnessing the poverty and suffering of the masses. This experience fueled his conviction that Vedānta must serve not only as a philosophy of liberation but as a force for social uplift.

He founded the Ramakrishna Math — the monastic order that grew out of the Baranagar Math established after Ramakrishna’s death in 1886 and later relocated to Belur — and in 1897 the Ramakrishna Mission, dedicated to the synthesis of spiritual practice and selfless service (daridra-Nārāyaṇa sevā — service to God in the form of the poor). In the West he established the Vedanta Societies of New York and San Francisco.

    Philosophical contributions

Vivekananda’s genius lay in making Advaita Vedānta accessible without diluting its depth. He presented the four yogas — Rāja Yoga (meditation), Karma Yogantry/karma) Yoga (selfless action), Bhakti Yogaopic/bhakti) Yoga (devotion), and Jñāna Yoga (knowledge) — as complementary paths to the same goal of Self-realization. His lectures and writings emphasized that the divine is not remote but immanent in every being.

    Literary works

    His major works include:

    • Rāja Yoga — a systematic exposition of Patañjali’s yoga philosophy
    • Karma Yoga — on the path of selfless action
    • Bhakti Yoga — on the path of devotion
    • Jñāna Yoga — on the path of knowledge
    • The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda — a nine-volume compilation of his lectures, letters, and writings

    Influence

Vivekananda’s impact extends far beyond religious circles. He inspired figures from Mahatma Gandhi to modern Hindu reform movements. His emphasis on strength, fearlessness, and the divinity of the soul continues to resonate across the world. The Ramakrishna Mission operates schools, hospitals, and disaster-relief programs in India and abroad.
