    Viśuddhānanda Paramahaṃsa

Viśuddhānanda Paramahaṃsa, known as the “Gandha Baba” of Varanasi, was a master of Surya Vijnan (solar science) and one of the most important yoga teachers of the early 20th century. He was the primary guru of Gopinath Kaviraj.

    Life/History

Born in Bengal, Viśuddhānanda traveled extensively before settling in Varanasi. He established his ashram near the Assi Ghat and became renowned for his mastery of esoteric yogic practices, particularly those related to the sun. His reputation as a powerful spiritual practitioner attracted students from across India.

    Teachings/Contributions

Viśuddhānanda’s primary contribution was the systematization and transmission of Surya Vijnan—a complex system of solar-based meditation and energy practices. He taught that the sun was the ultimate source of prana (life energy) and that mastery of solar practices could lead to accelerated spiritual evolution.

    Legacy

His most famous student, Gopinath Kaviraj, became one of the foremost scholars and practitioners of tantra in the 20th century. Through Kaviraj and other disciples, Viśuddhānanda’s teachings continue to influence yoga and tantra practitioners worldwide.
