    Viralminda Nayanar

Viralminda Nayanar is the Nayanar who taught — and enforced — that Shiva’s devotees must be honored before Shiva himself.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Viralminda of Sengunram held the rule that a devotee’s garland must be worn before the god’s. At Tiruvarur he found a wealthy man slighting the devotees while loading the god with offerings; he made the man carry water for the devotees’ service until the lesson was learned, and Shiva himself affirmed the rule. His saying — serve the servant, and the Lord is served — became doctrine.

    Legacy

The Nayanar canon preserves him as the “king of the devotee-first” rule; his story is told wherever the Shaiva teaching of the guru’s and devotee’s precedence is taught.
