    Vimuktisena

Vimuktisena (6th century CE) was an Indian Buddhist monk and philosopher who played an important role in the transmission of Yogācāra teachings to Tibet.

    Background

Vimuktisena studied at the great Buddhist monastery of Nalanda and was a leading authority on the Yogācāra (Mind-Only) school of Buddhist philosophy. He was a contemporary of the great Vinaya master Gunaprabha and lived during a period of philosophical consolidation in Indian Buddhism.

    Spiritual Contribution

Vimuktisena composed important commentaries on Asaṅga’s works and the Yogācāra philosophical system. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the Abhisamayālaṃkāra (Ornament of Clear Realization), a text attributed to Maitreya through Asaṅga. His commentaries helped clarify the relationship between Yogācāra philosophy and meditation practice.

    Legacy and Impact

Vimuktisena’s commentaries were transmitted to Tibet and became important reference works in Tibetan Buddhist monastic education. His interpretations of the Abhisamayālaṃkāra influenced the development of Tibetan philosophical scholarship and helped preserve the Yogācāra tradition in the Tibetan Buddhist context.
