T.K.V. Desikachar
T.K.V. Desikachar (टी.के.वी. देसीकचर) — full name Tirumalai Krishnamacharya Venkata Desikachar — was an Indian yoga teacher and son of T. Krishnamacharya. He developed the Viniyoga approach, which emphasizes adapting yoga practice to the unique needs of each individual, although in later life he abandoned that label and asked that what he taught simply be called “yoga.”
Life and mission
Born in Mysore, Karnataka, Desikachar studied engineering before turning to yoga under his father’s guidance. He spent decades learning and teaching alongside Krishnamacharya, absorbing the principles of individualized practice that would become his life’s work.
His mission was to make yoga therapy a recognized discipline and to demonstrate that yoga could be adapted to suit any person’s physical, mental, and spiritual needs, regardless of age, health condition, or life situation.
Philosophical contributions
Desikachar’s Viniyoga approach is based on the principle that yoga must be tailored to the individual, not the individual to yoga. Key principles include:
- Individualization — practice designed for each person’s specific needs
- Appropriate sequencing — postures chosen and ordered for therapeutic effect
- Breath as central — prāṇāyāma integrated into all practice
- Integration — connecting āsana, prāṇāyāma, and meditation with daily life
He emphasized that the purpose of yoga is not to achieve difficult postures but to create a state of inner balance and awareness.
Literary works
Desikachar’s writings reflect his therapeutic and personalized approach:
- The Heart of Yoga (1995) — a comprehensive guide to yoga practice and philosophy, emphasizing individual adaptation
- The Viniyoga® approach to yoga therapy — principles and methods of individualized practice
- Various articles and lectures on yoga therapy and meditation
Influence
Desikachar founded the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in Chennai in 1976, which became a leading center for yoga therapy and education. He trained numerous teachers in his individualized method, including Gary Kraftsow, who established the Viniyoga approach in the United States.
His approach to yoga therapy has influenced the development of yoga therapy as a clinical discipline worldwide.
Contemporary relevance
The Viniyoga approach has become foundational in yoga therapy and clinical yoga applications. His emphasis on adapting practice to individual needs has been embraced by yoga therapists, physical therapists, and healthcare professionals integrating yoga into treatment protocols.
