    Tirunilakanta Nayanar

Tirunilakanta Nayanar is the potter-saint whose fidelity to his wife became, in the hagiography, an object of Shiva’s own test.

    Life/Legend

The Periya Puranam relates that Tirunilakanta, a potter of Tiruninravur? of a village near Kanchipuram, held his wife in such devotion that he saw Shiva in her. To prove the saint’s purity, Shiva took the form of the husband and lived in the house; the wife, knowing the truth by her husband’s bearing, remained untouched by doubt. When the test was revealed, husband and wife are said to have merged into the sacred presence at the local shrine.

    Legacy

The story is told as the exemplar of the householder’s dharma in the Nayanar canon.
