Tiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar
Tiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar, the washerman-saint of Kanchipuram, is honoured for service done to Shiva’s devotees as service to Shiva himself.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that the washerman served devotees of Shiva with complete dedication, washing and caring for them without thought of gain. Shiva came to him as an old devotee in worn clothes; the saint served him as he served all, and the god revealed himself, taking the saint to his presence. His name — “the servant of the deity’s marks” — puns on the sacred ash he laundered from the garments of devotees.
Legacy
His story anchors the Nayanar teaching that ordinary labour becomes worship when directed at the god’s people.
