    Tiru Nilakanta Yazhpanar

Tiru Nilakanta Yazhpanar is the yal-player of the canon — the musician-saint whose lute accompanied Sambandar’s hymns, the founding image of Tamil devotional music.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that the Yazhpanar (“master of the yal,” the ancient lute) played while Sambandar sang, following the child-saint through the shrine-country; the pair are the tradition’s emblem of hymn and instrument as one worship. When Sambandar departed the world at Nallur, the musician is said to have followed — the tale reading music’s service as inseparable from the song.

    Legacy

Tamil temple music claims him as ancestor; his image with the yal stands beside Sambandar’s across the Shaiva south.
