    Thirumangai Alvar

Thirumangai Alvar (8th century CE) was one of the twelve Alvars — the Tamil Vaishnava poet-saints — and the author of the largest single share of hymns in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the canonical anthology of Tamil Vaishnava devotion. He is regarded as the last and most prolific of the Alvars.

    Background

Thirumangai Alvar was born in the village of Thirukurayalur in present-day Tamil Nadu. According to tradition, he was originally a warrior and chief of a group of bandits before his conversion to Vaishnava devotion. His transformation from a life of violence to one of poetic devotion is one of the most dramatic conversion stories in the Alvar tradition. He was a contemporary of the other later Alvars and devoted his life to the temples of Vishnu across South India.

    Teachings

Thirumangai Alvar’s poetry expresses intense devotion to Vishnu (specifically to Ranganatha at Srirangam and to Krishna at various temples). His hymns are characterized by their emotional range — from ecstatic praise to anguished longing — and by their vivid descriptions of the temples he visited. He emphasized the accessibility of God to all devotees, regardless of caste, and the power of divine grace to transform even the most hardened sinner.

    Works

    • Periya Tirumoli — the longest single composition in the Divya Prabandham, consisting of over 300 verses organized into ten decades
    • Contributions to other sections of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham
    • Hymns dedicated to numerous Vishnu temples across Tamil Nadu

    Legacy

Thirumangai Alvar’s Periya Tirumoli is among the most recited texts in Sri Vaishnava temple worship. His transformation from bandit to poet-saint embodies the Vaishnava ideal that divine grace can redeem anyone. He is honored in all major Sri Vaishnava temples, and his hymns form a central part of the daily liturgical practice of the tradition.
