Thirukoshtiyur Nambi
Thirukoshtiyur Nambi (c. 11th century CE) was a Sri Vaishnava teacher and the traditional guru of Ramanuja, who initiated him into the secret theology of the tradition.
Background
Thirukoshtiyur Nambi was a descendant of the family associated with the temple at Thirukoshtiyur (Sowmyanarayan Perumal temple) in Tamil Nadu. He held custody of the esoteric teachings passed down through the Sri Vaishnava lineage and was known for his reluctance to share them freely.
Spiritual Contribution
Thirukoshtiyur Nambi is remembered primarily for his role in transmitting the Rahasya Trayam — the three secret doctrines (Sri Bhashya, Vedartha Sangraha, and Nitya Grantha) — to Ramanuja. According to tradition, he initially refused to teach Ramanuja and only relented after repeated requests, eventually recognizing Ramanuja as the worthy recipient. His stewardship preserved teachings that became foundational to Sri Vaishnava theology.
Legacy and Impact
Through his transmission to Ramanuja, Thirukoshtiyur Nambi ensured the continuity of the esoteric tradition. He occupies an important place in the Sri Vaishnava guru lineage as the keeper and transmitter of the secret doctrines.
