    Swami Tejomayananda

Swami Tejomayananda (स्वामी तेजोमयानन्द) — “the radiant fullness of knowledge” — is an Indian spiritual teacher and the former head of the Chinmaya Mission. He succeeded Swami Chinmayananda as the mission’s leader and continued his legacy of Vedānta education.

    Life and mission

Born Sudhakar Kaitwade in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he studied physics and mathematics before joining the Chinmaya Mission. After several years of study and practice, he was initiated into sannyāsa by Swami Chinmayananda in 1983.

His mission has been to continue and expand the work of Chinmayananda, making Vedānta accessible through clear, systematic teaching and by maintaining the global network of Chinmaya Mission centers.

    Philosophical contributions

Tejomayananda’s teaching builds on the Advaita Vedānta tradition:

    • Systematic Vedānta — structured study of the Upaniṣads and Bhagavad Gītā
    • Devotion and knowledge — integrating bhakti with jñāna
    • Cultural education — preserving and transmitting Indian philosophical traditions
    • Accessible teaching — making complex philosophical concepts understandable

He emphasizes the importance of a systematic, guided study of the scriptures under a qualified teacher (guru) as the authentic path to self-knowledge.

    Literary works

    Tejomayananda’s writings and commentaries include:

    • Commentaries on major Upaniṣads — detailed expositions of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka, Chāndogya, and other Upaniṣads
    • Bhagavad Gītā commentary — continuing Chinmayananda’s work
    • Talks and discourses — recordings and transcripts of his teachings
    • Translations and interpretations — making Sanskrit texts accessible in modern languages

    Influence

As head of the Chinmaya Mission from 1994 to 2017, Tejomayananda guided the organization through a period of significant growth. He established new centers, expanded educational programs, and maintained the mission’s commitment to Vedānta education. He was succeeded by Swami Swaroopananda in 2017.

Under his leadership, the mission’s Bala Vihar and CHYK programs expanded globally, introducing thousands of young people to Indian philosophical traditions.

    Contemporary relevance

Tejomayananda’s emphasis on systematic study and cultural education has made the Chinmaya Mission a major institution for Vedānta learning in the modern world. His approach continues to influence how Vedānta is taught and practiced globally.
