    Swami Rama

Swami Rama was the Himalayan yogi who demonstrated voluntary control of autonomic functions in American laboratories — the experiments that made yoga’s claims scientifically testable — and founded the Himalayan Institute.

    Life

Raised in the tradition of the Bengali Baba and the Sri Vidya line of the Himalayas (his own account, Living with the Himalayan Masters, tells of training in cave monasteries), he came to the United States in 1970. At the Menninger Foundation his documented feats — stopping the heart? — voluntary control of heartbeat, temperature, and brainwaves — entered the scientific literature on biofeedback; the demonstrations founded a research genre.

    Teachings/Works

The Himalayan Institute (Honesdale, Pennsylvania) taught his synthesis — meditation, japa, the yoga-sutra psychology, and the superconscious meditation tradition. His books (Living with the Himalayan Masters, Science of Breath, Path of Fire and Light) carry the system.

    Controversy

A 1997 federal jury found the Institute liable in a civil suit concerning abuse allegations by a student; the encyclopedia records the litigation as documented controversy.

    Verification notes

    • Laboratory demonstrations are published in clinical literature; the abuse litigation (1994–1997) is documented public record.
    • Audited against Wikipedia (September 2026).
