Swami Muktananda
Swami Muktananda (1908–1982) was the Kashmir Shaiva–siddha master whose shaktipat-based Siddha Yoga brought the guru-transmission path to global scale from his Ganeshpuri ashram.
Background
Born Krishna Rai in Karnataka; a wandering monk from youth; in 1947 he received shaktipat from Bhagawan Nityanandaa](/person/nityananda) of Ganeshpuri, spending the next nine years (1947–56) in intensive sadhana (his Play of Consciousness records the kundalini process), succeeding Nityananda as the lineage’s teacher.
Spiritual Contribution
Siddha Yoga: the path of shaktipat initiation (the descent of grace awakening the kundalini), mantra (Om Namah Shivaya), meditation, and chanting; intensive world tours (1970–81) establishing ashrams in America and Europe; his books (Play of Consciousness, Kundalini: The Secret of Life) are the movement’s canon.
Legacy and Impact
His successor Swami Chidvilasananda (Gurumayi) leads Siddha Yoga worldwide; the movement’s SYDA Foundation institutionalized the transmission; his teaching shaped the modern American yoga-meditation scene’s guru-bhakti current; posthumous controversy (accounts of ashram misconduct) is part of the documented record, noted neutrally.
