Swami Kuvalayananda
Swami Kuvalayananda (Jagannath G. Gune) was the pioneer of scientific yoga research — the founder of Kaivalyadhama, the institute that first put yogic practice into the laboratory, and the teacher whose physiologically-framed yoga entered Indian education and medicine.
Life
Educated at Baroda, he studied yoga with Rajratna? — with the Paramahamsa Madhavdasji of Malsar, and in 1921 began publishing Yoga Mimamsa — the world’s first journal of yoga science. In 1924 he founded Kaivalyadhama at Lonavla, combining an ashram, a research department, and (from the 1930s) a yoga-training college affiliated with education boards. His laboratory studies of kapalabhati, uddiyana, and pranayama’s physiological effects were the first of their genre.
Teachings/Works
Asanas (1931) and Pranayama (1933) systematized practice in physiological terms; his collaboration with physicians defined therapeutic yoga’s early protocols. He advised the Indian government’s post-independence yoga-in-education initiatives.
Legacy
Kaivalyadhama remains a leading yoga research institution; the very idea that yoga claims are testable — the frame of all modern yoga science — descends from his work.
