    Sureshvara

Sureshvara is the first pontiff of the Sringeri Sharada Peethamri) Sharada Peetham and Shankara’s foremost direct disciple — the tradition’s great advocate of knowledge (jnana) as the single means of liberation, against any role for ritual action.

    Life

The tradition identifies him with Mandana Mishra, the great Mimamsa ritualist whom Shankara defeated in debate at Mahishmati, whose wife Ubhaya Bharati judged the contest, and who then took sannyasa as Sureshvara and was appointed to the southern matha. The identification is traditional; scholars debate it, but the two names’ doctrines are compatible in the tradition’s reading.

    Teachings/Works

His Naiskarmya Siddhi (“Establishment of Non-action”) argues that liberation comes through knowledge alone; his Varttikas (glosses) on Shankara’s Taittiriya and Brihadaranyaka commentaries are the earliest layer of Advaita exegesis.

    Legacy

Sringeri’s pontifical line begins from him; his debate-conversion story is the founding myth of Advaita’s triumph over ritualism in the tradition’s memory.

    Verification notes

    • The Mandana Mishra identification is traditional, debated by scholars; his works are authentic anchors.
