Sundaranandar
Sundaranandar (सुन्दरानन्दर्), also written Sundarananda or Sundarar, is a Tamil Siddhar counted among the eighteen Siddhars of the Tamil tradition. He is associated in tradition with the hill of Sathuragiri and with practices of longevity.
Tradition
Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and no independent records establish Sundaranandar’s dates or biography. Regional belief holds that the Siddhars dwelt for many ages upon Sathuragiri, a hill near the Thanipparai village in Tamil Nadu, and tradition names Sundaranandar among the masters associated with that sacred site. Accounts describe him as a devotee of Shiva who attained the perfected body through yoga and kaya kalpa practice. Works on medicine and gnana circulate in the Siddha corpus under his name, though such attributions reflect lineage practice rather than documented authorship.
Teachings/Contributions
The tradition remembers Sundaranandar chiefly in connection with longevity: the combination of herbal and mineral preparations, breath discipline, and worship intended to preserve and renew the body. This orientation is characteristic of the Siddha path, in which the body is treated as the vehicle of realization and its perfection as a legitimate spiritual aim. The material attributed to him belongs to the broader Siddha corpus of medical and yogic texts.
Legacy
Sundaranandar is venerated at Sathuragiri, which remains an active pilgrimage site for devotees of the Siddhars, and he appears in encyclopedic enumerations of the eighteen Siddhars, including the Abithana Chintamani.
