    Seruthunai Nayanar

Seruthunai Nayanar is the devotee whose honor-guard instinct for the god’s processional image became legend: when an elephant-rider let his foot swing near the deity’s path, the saint struck it — the canon’s emblem of the image’s sanctity.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that at Thiruvarur? — at a festival procession, a rider’s foot hung toward the passing deity; Seruthunai, unable to endure the disrespect, seized and punished the offending member before the crowd. The tale is told as the canon’s memory of processional etiquette’s sanctity — the god’s way treated as the god’s own body.

    Legacy

His story anchors the temple’s honor-culture in the canon’s memory; processions of the 63 include him.
