    Satti Nayanar

Satti Nayanar is the Nayanar whose zeal for the god’s honor crossed every bound: unable to bear a blasphemer’s slander of Shiva, he is said to have cut out the slanderer’s tongue.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Satti, a devotee of the Chola lands, held the god’s name beyond all tolerance; when a scoffer reviled Shiva in his hearing, Satti struck — and the god, the tale says, received the act as defense of his honor rather than as violence. The canon keeps the story without softening; modern readers encounter in it the tradition’s memory of devotional zeal’s fierce edge, preserved as hagiography rather than counsel.

    Legacy

His story is told with care as the canon’s hard case — the claim of the sacred upon the devotee’s whole self, at its most dangerous.
