    Sattaimuni

Sattaimuni (सत्तैमुनि), also written Sattai Muni or Sattamuni, is a Tamil Siddhar counted among the eighteen Siddhars of the Tamil tradition. He is associated in tradition with medicine and yoga, and the Siddha corpus credits him with a prolific body of writing, popularly reckoned at around one hundred works.

    Tradition

Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and no independent records establish Sattaimuni’s dates or biography. Popular accounts describe him as a seeker who renounced household life and studied under earlier Siddha masters, with some traditions placing him in a line of transmission running through Agastya and Bhogar. Works on medicine, alchemy, and gnana circulate in the Siddha corpus under his name, including texts known as Sattaimuni Gyanam and Sattaimuni Kandam. These attributions follow the customary pattern of assigning corpus texts to a master’s lineage rather than documenting authorship.

    Teachings/Contributions

The works attributed to Sattaimuni are chiefly concerned with healing and discipline: the preparation of herbal and mineral medicines, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and yogic practice directed toward the perfection of the body. As in the wider Siddha corpus, medicine is presented as inseparable from spiritual cultivation, with the disciplined body serving as the vehicle of liberation.

    Legacy

Sattaimuni appears in encyclopedic lists of the eighteen Siddhars, including the Abithana Chintamani, and in navagraha-associated lists of Siddhars, where he is linked with Ketu. He remains a reference point for Siddha medical lineages.

    Verification notes

    • Siddhar chronology is traditional, not historical; lineage and dating vary across accounts.
    • The “hundred works” figure and individual attributions are corpus traditions, not documented authorship.
