    Sathya Sai Baba

Sathya Sai Baba (Sathya Narayana Raju) was among the most followed spiritual teachers of modern India — the Puttaparthi avatar-claimant whose movement built free hospitals, schools, and water projects of national scale, and whose materialization claims drew sustained controversy.

    Life

Born at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, at fourteen (1940) he declared himself the reincarnation of the Shirdi Sai Baba/shirdi) Sai Baba, and drew followers to the village that became Prashanti Nilayam, one of India’s largest ashrams. His devotional movement spread worldwide; he died in 2011, the trust continuing the institutions.

    Teachings/Works

His teaching — “love all, serve all; help ever, hurt never” — emphasized the unity of faiths and service as worship. The institutions are the movement’s real doctrine: two super-specialty hospitals (free care), the Sri Sathya Sai universities, and the drinking-water projects that brought water to hundreds of villages of Rayalaseema and Chennai’s suburbs (the Sathya Sai water schemes).

    Controversy

Claims of materializing objects (vibhuti, rings, lingams) drew debunking campaigns and allegations of abuse; his organization denied the allegations and the devotional base remained enormous. The encyclopedia records both the claims and their disputations as documented controversy.

    Verification notes

    • Institutional facts (hospitals, water projects) are well documented; miracle claims and abuse allegations are disputed and presented as such.
    • Audited against Wikipedia (September 2026).
