    Sanatana Goswami

Sanatana Goswami (c. 1488–1558) was a Vaishnava theologian and one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan, the elder brother of Rupa Goswami.

    Background

Born in a Bengali Brahmin family, Sanatana Goswami served as a minister in the Bengal Sultanate before renouncing worldly life. He was one of the first disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and was sent to Vrindavan to excavate sacred sites and establish the Vaishnava tradition there.

    Spiritual Contribution

Sanatana Goswami authored the Brihad-bhagavatamrita, a comprehensive work on the stages of devotional life and the hierarchy of spiritual realization. He also wrote the Hari-bhakti-vilasa (along with Gopal Bhatta) and established the system of pilgrimage and temple worship in Vrindavan.

    Legacy and Impact

The Brihad-bhagavatamrita remains a standard reference work in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. His excavations in Vrindavan established it as the holiest pilgrimage center for Gaudiya Vaishnavas. His philosophical works set the standard for theological writing in the tradition.
