    Sakkiya Nayanar

Sakkiya Nayanar (“the Buddhist”) is the Nayanar who crossed from Buddhism to Shaiva devotion, offering to Shiva the only flowers his tradition knew — stones.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Sakkiya, born in the Buddhist fold, came to Shiva’s worship and, holding to his own habit of formlessness, offered pebbles as flowers — with such single-heartedness that the god received them as real blossoms. The tale is read as devotion overriding rite, and as the canon’s memory of the Buddhist-Shaiva frontier of the Tamil country.

    Legacy

His story anchors the Nayanar teaching that the god looks to the heart’s offering, not its category.
