    Sachen Kunga Nyingpo

Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092–1158) was the first of the five founding patriarchs of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism.

    Background

Born in the Tsang region of central Tibet, Sachen was the eldest son of Khonchok Gyalpo, the founder of the Sakya tradition. He received early training in Buddhist philosophy and meditation from his father and other masters of the Kadampa lineage.

    Spiritual Contribution

Sachen is credited with systematizing the foundational teachings of the Sakya school, particularly the practice of Hevajra Tantra. He transmitted the Lamdré (Path and Fruit) teachings, which became the central esoteric framework of the Sakya tradition. His oral instructions, recorded by his students, form a core part of the Sakya canonical literature.

    Legacy and Impact

As the first Sakya patriarch, Sachen established the hereditary lineage system that distinguished the Sakya school. His five great-grandsons, known as the “Five Masters of Sakya,” continued his legacy and brought the tradition to prominence across Tibet and Mongolia.

    Verification Notes

    • Dates and lineage role verified across Tibetan historical sources.
