    Romarishi

Romarishi (रोमर्षि), also written Roma Rishi or Romasha, is a Siddhar of the Tamil tradition remembered for botanical knowledge and herbal medicine. He is counted in extended Tamil listings of Siddha masters, alongside the standard eighteen Siddhars.

    Tradition

Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and no independent records establish Romarishi’s dates or biography. The name is associated in Hindu legend with the sage Romasha, said to have been born of hair and counted among ancient seers. In Tamil lore, Romarishi is remembered as a master of plants: stories describe him as dwelling in forests, conversing with herbs, and preparing medicines of remarkable power. Temple tradition, notably in the Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam corpus of Shiva legends, preserves stories in which Romarishi appears as a sage of great attained power. Herbal texts and formulations circulate in the Siddha corpus under his name, though such attributions reflect lineage practice rather than documented authorship.

    Teachings/Contributions

The material associated with Romarishi belongs to the Siddha science of plants: the identification, preparation, and therapeutic use of herbs, and the recognition of plant life as sentient participants in healing. In Siddha thought, such botanical knowledge is joined to yogic discipline, the healer’s own refinement being a condition of the medicine’s efficacy.

    Legacy

Romarishi is venerated at sites associated with him in Tamil Nadu, and his name endures in Siddha herbal lineages as a byword for knowledge of plants and forest medicine.
