    Rāmprasād Sen

Rāmprasād Sen (रामप्रसाद सेन, 18th c.) was a Bengali Shakta poet and devotee of Kali whose songs created the Rāmprasādī style of devotional music. His compositions blend intense devotion with philosophical depth and remain central to Bengali Shakta worship.

    Life/History

Rāmprasād Sen was born in Bengal (c. 1723/1718 – c. 1775) into a Bengali Baidya Brahmin family, and showed an inclination towards poetry from an early age. He was deeply influenced by the tantric scholar and yogi Krishnananda Agamavagisha, whose Tantrasāra tradition shaped his practice (Krishnananda lived in the 16th century, so the link is an inspirational lineage rather than personal contact).

He is said to have been a clerk or accountant before devoting himself entirely to the worship of Kali. His life was marked by intense devotion, periods of ecstatic trance, and a sometimes contentious relationship with orthodox Brahmin society.

    Teachings/Contributions

Rāmprasād Sen composed a large number of Kali songs (Rāmprasādī songs) in Bengali, which express an intimate, personal, and sometimes playful relationship with the Goddess:

“Mother, I have nothing to offer You but my heart. Take it, and I shall be content.”

    His songs are characterized by:

    • A direct, colloquial language that makes them accessible to common people
    • A blend of devotion and philosophical insight
    • Sometimes humorous or even impudent addresses to the Goddess
    • The use of Bengali folk melodies and rhythmic patterns

The Rāmprasādī style became a distinct genre of Bengali devotional music, credited with combining the Bengali folk style of Baul music with classical ragas and kirtan. His literary works include Vidyasundar, Kali-kirtana, Krishna-kirtana, and Shaktigiti; his songs are sold in the popular collection Ramprasadi Sangit at Shakta temples and pithas across Bengal.

    Legacy

Rāmprasād Sen is one of the most beloved figures of Bengal Bhakti. His songs are included in the standard repertoire of Bengali devotional music and are performed during Kali Puja and other festivals. The Rāmprasādī style continues to influence Bengali devotional music to this day.
