Perumizhalai Kurumba Nayanar
Perumizhalai Kurumba Nayanar is the devotee who, learning that his lord Sundarar had been called to Kailash, died with him — the Nayanar legend of devotion that will not outlive its object.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that the Kurumba of Perumizhalai had served Sundarar from afar, keeping his feast days and honoring his memory. When word came of the saint’s passage into the god’s presence, the devotee resolved not to remain behind; the tradition says he too was received — the tale of the double departure told as love’s arithmetic.
Legacy
His story anchors the canon’s extreme statements of attachment to the devotee as attachment to Shiva.
