    Padmapada

Padmapada (“lotus-foot”) is one of Shankara’s four principal disciples — the founder of his own Advaita sub-school through the Panchapadika, the first great commentary on Shankara’s Brahma Sutra bhashya.

    Life

The tradition names him Sanandana, a disciple of Kerala origin, and tells that Shankara, calling his students from the farther bank of the Ganga, saw Sanandana walk across the water — lotuses rising under his feet, hence the name Padmapada. He was appointed to the eastern seat? — traditions assign him the Dvaraka? — the Puri (Govardhana) matha in several lists.

    Teachings/Works

The Panchapadika (“Five Footprints”) glosses the first five sutras? — the first adhyaya’s first five adhikaranas of Shankara’s commentary with such authority that Prakashatman’s later Panchapadika-vivarana became a core Advaita curriculum text; the “Padmapada school” (his theory of reflection vs the Bhamati school’s limitation theory of superimposition) is one of Advaita’s two classical reading lineages.

    Legacy

Every serious Advaita student still reads the Panchapadika-vivarana; the reflection-theory debate he framed runs through the school’s history.

    Verification notes

    • His biography is hagiographic; the Panchapadika is the historical anchor.
