    Nubchen Sangye Yeshe

Nubchen Sangye Yeshe (c. 10th century) was an early Tibetan Buddhist master credited with preserving the tantric teachings during the Dark Period of Tibet.

    Background

Living during the post-Persecution period when Buddhism was suppressed in Tibet, Nubchen Sangye Yeshe was instrumental in secretly preserving the Mahayoga and Anuyoga teachings. He is associated with the Samye lineage and was a practitioner of both Nyingma tantra and Dzogchen.

    Spiritual Contribution

Nubchen authored the bsam gtan mig sgron (Lamp of the Eye of Dhyana), one of the earliest Tibetan treatises distinguishing between Dzogchen, Mahamudra, and other meditative traditions. He systematized the trekcho and tögal practices and helped preserve the inner tantras that nearly disappeared during the suppression.

    Legacy and Impact

His work is one of the few surviving texts from the early Dzogchen tradition in Tibet. He is considered a key link in the transmission chain of the Nyingma school, bridging the gap between the early diffusion and the later renaissance of Buddhism in Tibet.
