Narayana Guru
Narayana Guru (Sree Narayana Guru) was a Kerala sage and social reformer whose consecration of the Aruvippuram Shiva shrine in 1888 defied the caste order of his time. His teaching — one caste, one religion, one God — reshaped modern Kerala.
Life
Born into the Ezhava community, barred from temple access, Narayana Guru consecrated his first shrine at Aruvippuram when a Brahmin challenged his right: “This is not a Brahmin Shiva but an Ezhava Shiva.” He went on to install shrines across Kerala deliberately bearing inscriptions of non-sectarian teaching, founded schools, and in 1903 blessed the formation of the SNDP Yogam (Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana).
Teachings/Works
His Malayalam and Sanskrit verse — Atmopadesa Satakam (One Hundred Verses of Self-Instruction), Daiva Dasakam (Ten Verses on God), Jati Nirnaya — teach Advaita as social fact: what is one cannot be ranked. His councils with Rabindranath Tagore (1912? recorded 1922 visit) and Gandhi (1925) framed Kerala’s reform debates.
Legacy
Kerala’s 20th-century social transformation is narrated through his name; his samadhi at Sivagiri, Varkala, draws annual pilgrimage, and the Sivagiri pilgrimage he prescribed is a festival of education and cleanliness as devotion.
