    Nanjiyar

Nanjiyar (c. 11th–12th century CE) was a prominent Sri Vaishnava teacher and commentator, celebrated for his exposition of Nammalvar’s Tiruvaymoli.

    Background

Nanjiyar was a disciple in the Sri Vaishnava lineage and studied under the direct tradition of the earlier acharyas. He was based in the Tamil Nadu temple region and dedicated his life to interpreting the Tamil devotional literature of the Alvars.

    Spiritual Contribution

Nanjiyar’s greatest contribution is his commentary on the Tiruvaymoli, Nammalvar’s masterwork, which became the standard reference for understanding this foundational Tamil Vaishnava text. His interpretation established key hermeneutical principles for reading Alvar poetry as Vedantic theology. He also composed devotional works and trained a generation of students, including the famous Nampillai.

    Legacy and Impact

Nanjiyar’s Tiruvaymoli commentary remains central to Sri Vaishnava study and devotion. Through his disciple Nampillai, his interpretive tradition continued to shape the Tenkalai school of Sri Vaishnavism..](/topic/vashnavism)
