Nandanar
Nandanar (Nandan) is the Nayanar saint born into the Pulaiyar community, then treated as untouchable, whose longing for Shiva’s darshan became one of the most retold stories of the Tamil canon. Gopalkrishna Bharati’s 19th-century Nandanar Charitiram made him a symbol of caste reform in modern Tamil Nadu.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Nandan, a leatherworker of Adhanur, served the temple of Shiva in his heart though barred from entry. Standing outside the gate of the Thirupungur shrine, he is said to have been granted sight when the image of Nandi shifted aside. The god of Thirunallur, moved by his longing, called the saint to himself: the hagiography tells that Nandan, purified in the sacred fire, entered the sanctum and was seen no more in mortal form.
Legacy
Nandanar is among the most painted and sculpted Nayanars. The 19th-century musical drama transformed him into an icon against untouchability, and his image among the 63 remains an object of pilgrimage.
