Nampillai
Nampillai (c. 12th–13th century CE) was a Sri Vaishnava acharya and exponent of the Tenkalai (southern) school, known for his deep devotion and his systematization of Alvar theology.
Background
Nampillai was a disciple of Nanjiyar and studied in the lineage descending from Nathamuni. He was based in the Srirangam and Kanchipuram regions of Tamil Nadu. His name, meaning “the elder among us,” reflects the esteem in which he was held by his followers.
Spiritual Contribution
Nampillai was renowned for his devotional life and his exegetical work on the Tiruvaymoli and other Alvar texts. He emphasized the primacy of grace (kripa) and total surrender (prapatti) as the means of liberation, themes central to the Tenkalai school. He trained many students who carried forward his interpretation, and his teachings shaped the devotional culture of later Sri Vaishnavism..](/topic/vashnavism)
