    Nami Nandi Adigal

Nami Nandi Adigal (c. 7th century CE) is one of the 63 Nayanars — the devotee whom the Periya Puranam remembers for lighting the lamps of Thiruvarur and for the habit that made him famous: addressing every person he met as Shiva himself.

    Background

Born in the Chola country, Nami Nandi Adigal’s devotion centered on Thiruvarur, the great Shiva shrine of the south.

    Spiritual Contribution

His lamp-service at the temple and his vision of Shiva in all people — the “every person is Hara” habit that the Periya Puranam preserves as a teaching of seeing the divine without exception — are his remembered acts. His observance is kept in the Nayanar liturgical calendar.

    Legacy and Impact

His image stands in the temple friezes; his story is read in the annual Periya Puranam observances as the parable of universal reverence.

    Verification notes
