    Nagarjuna the Alchemist

Nagarjuna the Alchemist (नागार्जुन, सिद्ध) is the figure counted among the 84 mahasiddhas of Vajrayana Buddhism who is celebrated as a master of rasa shastra — the alchemical science of mercury and minerals. He is a distinct traditional figure from Nagarjuna the Madhyamaka philosopher, though the two have often been conflated.

    Life and Legend

The alchemical siddha Nagarjuna appears in hagiographies, tantric lineage lists, and the rasa shastra literature as a yogi who perfected the transmutation of base metals, the preparation of mercury elixirs, and longevity practices. The Rasaratnakara (“Mine of Mercury”), a foundational Sanskrit text of Indian alchemy, is traditionally attributed to him, as are related treatises such as the Rasendramangala in some recensions. Hagiographic accounts — including the Tibetan versions of the siddha lives — describe him withdrawing to Sri Parvata in the Andhra region, achieving the elixir body, and living for centuries. Scholars generally distinguish this alchemist from the Madhyamaka philosopher (c. 2nd–3rd century CE), placing the alchemical works and their author or authors much later, within the late first millennium CE; some suggest the name reflects a lineage or title rather than a single person.

    Teachings

    • Rasa shastra — purification and use of mercury (rasa) and minerals for elixirs, medicine, and transmutation.
    • Body as vehicle — the perfected body (siddha deha) as a support for realization.
    • Buddhist tantric sources link him to longevity and accomplishment practices.

    Legacy

Nagarjuna the alchemist anchored the rasa shastra tradition later inherited by Nath alchemists and Ayurvedic iatrochemistry.

    Verification notes
