Murkha Nayanar
Murkha Nayanar (“the rogue”) is the gambler-saint of the Nayanar canon, who gave every winning to the temple — the legend that reads even a dissolute trade as devotion’s channel.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Murkha of the Chola? — of the southern country, lived by dice and gave his winnings wholly to the god of his town; the vow held in loss as in gain, and when losing stripped him he staked himself — the tradition says the god accepted him as the stake. The tale is the canon’s most provocative reading of the “fool for God.”
Legacy
The story is told as grace’s indifference to respectability — a hard saying the canon keeps deliberately.
