    H. W. L. Poonja

    H. W. L. Poonja (Papaji) (1910–1997) was an Indian spiritual teacher and a prominent figure in the neo-Advaita movement. (Note: This is a separate entry from the existing ‘papaji.md’ file, providing expanded biographical details.)

    Background

Born in Gujranwala, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Poonja was initially a devotee of Ramana Maharshi. He worked for decades in various government positions before retiring to Lucknow, where he began teaching spiritual seekers in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Spiritual Contribution

Poonja’s teaching emphasized the immediate recognition of the Self and the futility of spiritual practice as a means to attain what one already is. He used the traditional Advaitic method of self-inquiry, pointing students to the source of the “I”-thought. His style was direct, uncompromising, and sometimes confrontational.

    Legacy and Impact

Many of his students went on to become prominent spiritual teachers, including Gangaji, Mooji, Eli Jaxon-Bear, and others. He is considered a major figure in the transmission of Advaita Vedanta to Western seekers.
