Mian Mir
Mian Mir is the Qadiri Sufi of Lahore whom Sikh tradition remembers as Guru Arjan’s revered friend — and whom later legend credits with laying the foundation stone of the Harmandir Sahib.
Life
A Qadiri ascetic of Sindh origin settled at Lahore, Mian Mir was famed for poverty, silence, and refusal of court favor; Dara Shikoh (a century later? — Dara sought his line’s blessing and compiled accounts of him) honored him as the Sufi ideal. The Sikh tradition holds that Guru Arjan invited him to lay the Golden Temple’s foundation stone — a symbol of Hindu-Muslim syncretism beloved of both communities; historians note the story appears late (18th–19th c. sources), while the friendship itself belongs to the tradition’s core memory.
Teachings/Works
No writings; his significance is the exemplar’s — the Sufi whose blessing crossed communal lines.
Legacy
His shrine at Lahore remains a shared pilgrimage; the foundation-stone story (repeated in speeches, textbooks, and song) made him the emblem of Punjab’s composite culture.
