Meiporul Nayanar
Meiporul Nayanar is the king who protected his own assassin because the man came disguised as a devotee — the Nayanar legend of honor given to the garb of the god.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Meiporul, a Chera? — a petty sovereign of the Kongu country, honored every wearer of devotee’s marks. His enemy Muthanathan, coveting the throne, disguised himself as a devotee and entered the palace; warned at the door, the king refused to turn away the sacred dress and was mortally wounded by the guest. Dying, he ordered the assassin spared and released. The tale reads honor itself as devotion.
Legacy
The story is told as the Nayanar canon’s most severe statement of the devotee’s sanctity.
