Mangayarkkarasiyar
Mangayarkkarasiyar is the Pandya queen remembered among the 63 Nayanars for her role in restoring Shaiva worship at the Madurai court. She is one of the few women in the Nayanar canon.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that the Pandya king had been drawn toward Jain ascetics, and that Shaiva worship at Madurai had fallen into neglect. The queen, a devout Shaiva, together with the minister Kulachirai Nayanar, invited the child-saint Sambandar to the city. His hymns and the debates that followed are said to have turned the king back to Shiva, restoring the temple cult of Madurai. The Periya Puranam presents her steadfastness through the years of the king’s estrangement as devotion of the highest order.
Legacy
Mangayarkkarasiyar is honoured in the Nayanar canon and depicted in temple processions of the 63 saints. Her story anchors the tradition’s memory of the Pandya court’s return to Shaivism.

- The account is hagiographic (Periya Puranam); the historical core — a Pandya king’s alignment with Shaivism in the 7th century — is broadly accepted, the details are not.
