    Manavala Mamunigal

Manavala Mamunigal (मानवाळ मामुनिगळ्, 1370–1443), also called Manavala Mahamuni, was a Sri Vaishnava acharya regarded as the principal systematizer and final teacher (chinna jeeyar) of the Tenkalai (southern) school. He devoted his life to expounding the Alvars’ Divya Prabandham and is honoured at Srirangam with the title Visvata Chakravarti (“emperor of the whole world”), a unique distinction in the tradition.

    Life/Legend

Traditional accounts relate that he was born in 1370 at Kidaram (Alvar Tirunagari) in the Tamiraparani region, and that his uncle, Tiruvaymozhi Pillai, an exponent of Pillai Lokacharya’s teachings, became his guru. He later settled at Srirangam, where he lectured on the Tiruvaymoli of Nammalvar nine times, and compiled commentarial and devotional works consolidating the Tenkalai inheritance from Pillai Lokacharya and Vedanta Chakravartin. Tradition holds that the deity Ranganatha himself responded to a verse of his dedication by declaring him adopted as his own son, whence the name Manavala Mamuni (“Manavala” of Vishnu). These episodes are devotional tradition rather than documentary history, though his dates and works are well attested in the tradition’s records.

    Works

    • Upadesa Ratthinamalai — a Tamil gem-string of instructions on surrender (prapatti).
    • Arti Prabandham, Tiruvaymozhi Nurrandadi — Tamil devotional works.
    • Yatiraja Vimsati — Sanskrit hymn on Ramanuja; commentaries on the Stotra Ratna and Rahasya texts.

    Legacy

Manavala Mamunigal is revered as the last great acharya of the Tenkalai lineage; his works anchor Tenkalai doctrine and his recensional work shaped the transmitted Divya Prabandham.
