Macchamuni (Matsyendranath in Tamil tradition)
Macchamuni (मच्छमुनि), also written Machamuni or Matsyamuni, is a Tamil Siddhar counted among the eighteen Siddhars of the Tamil tradition. His name, “the fish-born muni,” and Tamil lists identify him with Matsyendranath, the legendary founder of the Nath order.
Tradition
Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and no independent records establish Macchamuni’s dates or biography. The identification with Matsyendranath rests on shared legend: both figures are linked with the story of a sage who, swallowed by a fish or dwelling among fish, overheard Shiva’s secret teaching and thereby attained realization. Tamil enumerations of the eighteen Siddhars, including the Abithana Chintamani, record this identification. Works on yoga, gnana, and rejuvenation circulate in the Siddha corpus under his name, though such attributions reflect lineage practice rather than documented authorship.
Teachings/Contributions
The material attributed to Macchamuni concerns yogic discipline and the attainment of the perfected body: breath control, the awakening of inner energy, and the union of method and devotion. The identification with Matsyendranath places the Tamil figure within the broader Nath yogic tradition, which strongly influenced hatha yoga across India, and the Siddha corpus treats this teaching lineage as one root of Tamil Siddha practice.
Legacy
Macchamuni remains a fixed figure in enumerations of the eighteen Siddhars and is venerated at Siddhar shrines in Tamil Nadu. Through the Matsyendranath identification, his legend connects Tamil Siddha tradition with the wider Nath lineage.
