    Longchenpa

Longchenpa (Longchen Rabjam, Drimé Özer) is the Nyingma school’s greatest philosopher — the “omniscient one” whose Seven Treasuries systematized Dzogchen into the tradition’s definitive architecture.

    Life

Born in the Yarlung valley, he trained at Samye, received the Nyingtig (Heart Essence) transmissions from Kumaraja? — from Rigdzin Kumaradza, and spent years in retreat in the Chimphu caves. He systematized the Vima Nyingtig and Khandro Nyingtig into the Fourfold Heart Essence (Nyingtig Yabzhi), and composed the Seven Treasuries and the Three Cycles of Ease? — the Trilogy of Natural Ease — as Dzogchen’s grand synthesis.

    Teachings/Works

The Seven Treasuries (mdzod bdun) — including the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury and the Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle — organize the whole Nyingma path: sutra, tantra, and Dzogchen’s cutting-through (trekchö) and direct-leap (tögal). His style pairs scholastic completeness with the lyric of direct experience.

    Legacy

Every Nyingma curriculum builds on Longchenpa; Jigme Lingpa’s Longchen Nyingtik terma (18th c.) flows from visions of him; Patrul Rinpoche’s The Words of My Perfect Teacher transmits his frame.
